What is Pulmonary Function Testing?
Pulmonary function testing includes a series of non-invasive tests that measure how well your lungs take in and release air and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. These tests are essential in diagnosing and managing a wide range of pulmonary, cardiovascular and neuromuscular conditions, including:
- Asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Sarcoidosis
- Restrictive lung disease
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Silicosis
- Coal miner lung
- Toxic Lung due to exposure to burn pits and deployment environment
- Pre-operative evaluations and many other conditions
What to Expect
PFTs are performed in our comfortable, in-office setting using state-of-the-art equipment. The process typically includes tests like spirometry, lung volume measurement, and diffusion capacity. Most tests involve simply breathing in and out through a mouthpiece while following guided instructions from our respiratory team. The entire process usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
